The Egoist: A Comedy in Narrative

The Egoist: A Comedy in Narrative

George Meredith

Fiction / Poetry

The Egoist by George Meredith recounts the story of self-absorbed Sir Willoughby Patterne and his attempts at marriage; jilted by his first bride-to-be, he vacillates between the sentimental Laetitia Dale and the strong-willed Clara Middleton. More importantly, the novel follows Clara's attempts to escape from her engagement to Sir Willoughby, who desires women to serve as a mirror for him and consequently cannot understand why she would not want to marry him. Thus, The Egoist dramatizes the difficulty contingent upon being a woman in Victorian society, when women's bodies and minds are trafficked between fathers and husbands to cement male bonds.

Soldier A: Behind Iraqi Lines

Shaun Clarke

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi tanks rolled into Kuwait and put a quarter of the world's oil reserves at risk. This led to the spectacular Hundred Day War known as Operation Desert Storm. Involved in that war, but secretly, was the legendary Special Air Service – the SAS! As specialists in desert warfare, the SAS were plunged into a maelstrom of highly dangerous, covert operations – often deep inside enemy territory. Their activities included reconnaissance, espionage, sabotage, the capture of prisoners, the rescue of hostages, infiltration of Iraqi towns, and daring hit-and-run raids in their renowned 'Pink Panther' armed Land Rovers. Some were captured and tortured. Others were executed. Nevertheless, fighting covertly alongside the 'Desert Rats' of the 7th Armoured Brigade, in a land of burning sand and featureless, blazing sky, the SAS performed feats of daring that became legendary even before the Hundred Day War had ended. Soldier SAS: Behind Iraqi Lines is...

The Case Has Altered

Martha Grimes

The sun, smoking behind a haze of cloud, threw off a light of burnished pewter. Mysteriously lit, it was as if the watery, colorless land refused drabness, stood determinedly against dimishment. This is a landscape that can easily deceive, a landscape that volunteers nothing, as if to say, You're on your own, mate—much like the habitues of the only pub for miles around called The Case Has Altered. The Lincolnshire fenlands are the right setting for Richard Jury's latest case, a mystifying double murder. The body of one woman is found on the wash; another woman lies floating in a canal in Windy Fen. Both women are connected with Fengate: Dorcas Reese, a servant; Verna Dunn, the louche ex-wife of the owner, Max Owen, a man with a passion for antiques.
