Emil laughed. This had gone better than he’d ever expected. Well, other than the 3 million point penalty. That was a catastrophe, but there was still time to salvage it. He felt bad about having tricked Silas. The boy seemed like he had a good heart, but a good heart wasn’t going to win this. Playing by the systems rules would have left Earth vulnerable and most of humanity would have died.
As he laughed, he stroked his hand across the feathers of a turtle parrot. It was both colorful and quite tough. With the influx of mana, it was nearly as big as him. The same could be said for most of his pets. They all still tried to flock towards him, like he was their homing beacon, but he ordered them away. They needed to spread and propagate if humanity was going to be ready for what was coming.
He stretched out his fingers. They cracked and popped. He was definitely paying a price for refusing to go on missions as a Forerunner. The frail debuff was no laughing matter, and it kept getting worse every day he didn’t go on a mission after the first seven days. At this rate, he’d be little stronger than a normal human soon, but he had a way around that.
The other Forerunners thought of him as a beast tamer, but one doesn’t tame one’s partners. No, he loved his beasts, and they loved him in return. That allowed him to borrow traits from one of more of his beasts and empower his body even beyond the limits the system was putting on him. Emil smiled again at that thought. He loved cheating.
Now, though, to pull off the ultimate cheat. He needed to make more preparations, and then it would be time to place his bet. He was just glad that he wasn’t stuck having to use Jiang. That boy’s mindset was all wrong. But it was time to get down to business. There was his next target. A convoy of soldiers sent in to keep peace in the area. He didn’t like to be responsible for so much death, but anything for the greater good.
Emil made a high-pitched sound and waved his hand to direct his babies at the convoy. The soldiers wouldn’t know what hit them.

Cece was climbing out of the shower. It was her third one today. She didn’t know why, but she just felt insufferably hot. Between that and the non-stop barrage on tv about alien ships, flying men, monsters, nuclear explosions, and terrorist attacks in Norway of all places… well the world was going crazy. The university had even shut down for the rest of the week and all of her friends were taking the opportunity to head home to be with their families.
Even as she got out of the shower and started to dry off, it felt like the beads of water on her skin were turning into steam and evaporating off of her. The air around her felt so muggy and thick, almost like she could cut it with a knife. Cece began to wonder if something was wrong with her. She couldn’t talk to mom. If she did, she’d be on her way to the hospital in nothing flat, and Silas was rarely around.
She knew she could be a brat at times, but he’d always looked out for her when it really mattered. Even when he was around, he was so odd lately. She missed her brother. As she walked into her second-story bedroom in just a towel, she thought about going out to the shed but wasn’t sure she wanted to know what he was up to out there.
Cece glanced out the window and then let out a blood-curdling scream. There was a little gray man attached to her window, staring at her.
