Chapter 1
The massive military ship barely rocked despite the waves in the ocean below us, and I gripped the railing as I watched the shore grow closer with every passing minute.
I glanced over my shoulder again to reassure myself that Lorenzo was still in place. He was up on the bridge with the captain and navigation officers, and he was shielding the almost nine-hundred-foot-long retired Navy ship from unwanted eyes with a powerful glamour.
My people had tracked the captured centaurs from Jasper’s herd over the last week and a half. Their dedication and hard work had paid off, and now we were off the coast of Liberia in the northwest region of Africa.
Ena and Kage were huddled together nearby as they went over the details of our rescue mission one last time.
The sun was setting behind us in the west, and the orange light cast extra-long shadows across the deck.
I sighed and turned around to check on the various passengers aboard the rescue mission ship.
Jasper, the brown-haired centaur, stood with about fifty members of his herd on the top deck, and the occasional low thump of their hooves on the ship’s metal deck added a chaotic rhythm with absolutely zero pattern to the tense environment. The warm light of the setting sun shone on the sleek hair of the horse halves of their bodies, and sharp shadows showed in the defined muscles of their powerful legs.
Jasper was quiet and tense, and most of his herd mirrored his serious mood. Which was more than understandable as we approached the captives of their herd members.
The breeze shifted enough to bring Ena and Kage’s voices to my ears, and I picked up on what they were saying.
