The murder of a personal fitness trainer draws DCI Bill Slider and his team into a baffling investigation where nothing is as it first appears. Fitness trainer Erik Lingoss is found dead in his west London flat, his head smashed by one of his own dumbbells. His heartlessly-dumped girlfriend, blood on her clothes and hands, is the prime suspect. She had means, opportunity, and motive. But is the case as clear-cut as it seems? Handsome Erik Lingoss had clients in high places; and he seemed to engender powerful emotions. If it was a crime of passion, there was plenty of that to go round: love strong as death, jealousy cruel as the grave. Who did he let in to his flat that evening? Where is his missing mobile phone? Why is seven hundred pounds in cash stuffed under his pillow? The deeper Slider and his team dig, the clearer it becomes there's far more to this case than meets the eye.

For a policeman, there are some questions that have to be asked even if you don't want to know the answers . . . A middle-aged man jumps under a tube train at Shepherd's Bush station, and a teenage girl is killed in a hit-and-run, in a country lane puzzlingly far from her home on the White City Estate: two unrelated incidents which occupy DCI Bill Slider and his team during a slack period. At least it's a change of speed after the grind of domestics, burglaries and Community Liaison. But links to a cold case – another dead teenager, pulled out of the River Thames – create doubts as to whether they are indeed unrelated. And slowly a trail of corruption and betrayal is uncovered, leading Slider and his firm ever deeper into a morass of horror.

A fatherless girl grows up a virtual prisoner in the shabby backwater of Kensington Palace, despised by her relations, bullied and insulted by her foolish mother's evil genius. Only the core of stubbornness in her nature sustains her as she waits for the day of deliverance - the day she will become Queen of England. She is Victoria; this is her story, recorded in her own words in the last troubled year of her life. With humanity and humour the Queen Empress of half the world looks back over eighty crowded years, remembering domestic crisis and public triumph, war, revolution and the fall of dynasties; remembering most of all the great and abiding love that illuminated every aspect of her life. This is the autobiography Queen Victoria might have written, and reveals the private woman behind the public mask - quick tempered, proud and incurably honest; shy, vulnerable and always, indefatigably, amused.

A new Bill Slider mystery - When Melanie Hunter goes missing, the men in her life come under suspicion. And there's plenty to suspect; lies, half-truths, deceptions. When you pull one thread, the whole fabric of family life can come apart. There are secrets in Melanie's past, and pain she tried to hide from the world. slider and his team need to answer two questions: who loved Melanie, and who loved her too much . . . (20120101)ReviewThe always reliable Harrod-Eagles adds another winner to her excellent Bill Slider series. London Detective Inspector Slider’s latest case has the intrepid copper trying to solve the murder of Melanie Hunter, a pretty young woman with a sad past and a future that looked bright until she was killed. There are plenty of potential suspects, from the oddball who lived downstairs and who’d served time for killing his wife to Melanie’s stepfather, a teacher whose respectable facade covers a brutal nature, to Melanie’s boyfriend, a real-estate agent sorely lacking in scruples. Slider is frustrated when the investigation moves at a snail’s pace, but even when a light-bulb moment leads to a solution, the case is so full of sadness and tragedy that resolution brings little satisfaction. While Harrod-Eagles conjures up an absorbing police procedural, it’s her ability to capture the foibles of her characters, to make them come alive, to show the playfulness and passion of human nature, and to evoke the reader’s empathy that makes her books stand out. Highly recommended for all readers of police procedurals.(Cynthia Harrod-Eagles Booklist ) About the AuthorCynthia Harrod-Eagles was born and educated in Shepherd's Bush, London and had a variety of jobs in the commercial world, starting as a junior cashier at Woolworth's and working her way down to Pensions Officer at the BBC. 'It's quiet out there,' says DS Atherton, at Bill Slider's office window. 'Too quiet.' Right on cue, the phone rings. 'Now look what you've done,' says Slider. It's a homicide. The post-Christmas lull is officially over. The deceased is antiques expert Rowland Egerton, the darling of daytime TV, stabbed to death in his luxurious West London home. The press are going to be all over this one like a nasty rash: the pressure's on Slider for a result, and soon. Egerton's partner, the bulky, granite-faced John Lavender, found the body; did he also do the deed? Or was it a burglary gone wrong? A missing Fabergé box and Impressionist painting point that way. But as Slider and his team investigate, none of the facts seem to fit. And it soon becomes clear that the much-loved, charming Mr Egerton wasn't as universally loved, or perhaps as charming, as Slider was first led to believe . . .

A Bill Slider Mystery - When ex-BBC correspondent Ed Stonax is found dead, the last thing Detective Inspector Slider needs to complicate his life is the reappearance of an old enemy issuing death threats. Trevor Bates, aka The Needle, is on the loose and trying to kill him, and with a high-profile murder to solve, Slider must try to find a spare moment to marry Joanna before their baby is born and stay alive long enough to do it . . .From Publishers WeeklyIn Harrod-Eagles's elegant 11th Bill Slider mystery (after 2005's Dear Departed), the detective inspector investigates the murder of civil servant Ed Stonax, a former high-profile BBC correspondent, found dead with his skull smashed on the floor of his West London flat. Stonax had been looking into something to do with a building site in Scotland, but no one can break his computer code to find out exactly what. Meanwhile, Slider's ladies' man of an assistant, Jim Atherton, falls for Stonax's grieving daughter, Emily, and Slider and his musician love, Joanna, are trying to marry before their firstborn arrives. To complicate matters further, convicted murderer Trevor Bates (aka The Needle) is at large and threatening to get even with Slider. The various plot lines neatly intersect at the highest levels of government by the end of this appealing English whodunit. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From BooklistStarred Review The versatile Harrod-Eagles is a dab hand at everything from historical romances and sweeping family sagas to teen fiction and police procedurals, and her latest book, another winning entry in the Bill Slider series, shows off her writing skills to perfection. Slider is soon to become a husband and, shortly afterward, a father, because his fiancée, Joanna, is expecting their first child. But when journalist Ed Stonax is murdered, Slider must shift his priorities. Stonax was a respected newspaperman who resigned to join the government. Shortly afterward, he and a colleague were photographed in a compromising situation with a young woman, and Stonax suffered a spectacular fall from grace. Now he is dead, and Slider must find his killer. On top of that, Slider’s old nemesis, arch-criminal Trevor Bates, has started a campaign of taunts and intimidation designed to annoy Slider—or worse. Suddenly, Slider is juggling concern over Joanna’s pregnancy, death threats from Bates, and one of the most complex murder cases of his career. A bit slow to start, the story soon picks up speed and rumbles along to a satisfying finish. Like John Harvey’s Charley Resnick, Slider’s mix of toughness, sensitivity, and melancholy works on all levels. --Emily Melton

DCI Bill Slider tackles the coldest of cold cases in this absorbing mystery. A young couple discover human remains buried in the garden of their new house: could this be the resting place of 14-year-old Amanda Knight, who disappeared from the same garden two decades before, and was never seen again? The problem comes almost as a relief to DCI Slider, still suffering from the fallout of his previous case. He is not popular with the Powers That Be, and his immediate boss, Detective Superintendent Porson, reckons that at least this little puzzle will keep Slider out of trouble. After all, with a murder twenty years in the past, this is the coldest of cold cases. Most of the suspects and principal players are now dead too, and all passion is long spent. Or is it?
